Australia’s first bilingual Mandarin and English comedy series GIRL, INTERPRETED brilliantly captures the experience of Chinese migrants and diaspora caught in between eastern and western culture.
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – Off the back of being picked up by streaming giants Tencent Video and iQiyi for online distribution in China, Melbourne-created web series GIRL, INTERPRETED is now available online worldwide.
Highlighting the dizzying array of society and services interpreters are required to manage and the cultural misunderstandings that can occur, the five-episode series follows a young nervous interpreter as she stutters and stumbles her way through the job, from a vlogger’s live stream to a doctor’s consultation, high-brow gallery exhibition and more.
Creator and writer/director GRACE FENG FANG JUAN, who migrated from Guangdong to Melbourne to attend film school in 2006, has called on her own professional interpreting experience to create a laugh-out-loud comedy that sheds light on the overlooked world of interpreters and translators.
Through five-minute bite-sized episodes full of hilarious language faux pas, Girl, Interpreted shines a light on their crucial – but oft awkward – role in facilitating communication for the day-to-day of migrant communities in contemporary Australia.
Feng says, “ Girl, Interpreted captures the elusiveness of belonging in a new country when you cannot speak the native language and the frustration felt when you’re unable to reach an understanding – something many international students and migrants in Australia experience, including me.”
Lead actress JENNY ZHOU is Australian born and raised. She moved to Shanghai, the birthplace of her parents, to study at the prestigious Shanghai Theatre Academy, before kick-starting her career on screen with appearances on ABC’s THE TIME OF OUR LIVES and PLEASE LIKE ME as well as Netflix series CHOSEN , produced by Playmaker Media . Girl, Interpreted is Zhou’s first comedic lead role.
The series is produced by NIKKI TRAN (creator of web series FRESH! ) and funded with support from Screen Australia, Film Victoria and Australian Film Television and Radio School.
