One Suburb, Thousand and One Stories preview

One Suburb, Thousand and One Stories is a project run by Relationships Australia Victoria's Family Relationship Centre in Sunshine, in conjunction with Djerriwarrh Employment and Education Services and VicSeg New Futures. The project is a collection of stories and interviews which unveil the richness of diversity and culture in the City of Brimbank in Melbourne. The aim of the project is to encourage parents to share their heritage, language, customs and traditions with their children, especially those who have immigrated and settled in Australia recently. This is a short preview and introduction to the full video. Music: "Lendenmain au Cafe"by Lessazo 2006

Over the past few months, I have been working closely with Relationships Australia Victoria's Family Relationship Centre in Sunshine compiling stories of locals living in the local Brimbank area for a project named One Suburb, Thousand and One Stories.

Besides discovering a diversity in Sunshine and the western suburbs that I was oblivious to, I also learnt a lot about cultures and customs of people I rarely have a chance to meet. The resulting compilation is made up of 15 little interviews and introductions that give us a glimpse into the lives of parents from a diverse range of countries in Africa, the middle east and south Asia. They agreed to be filmed and shared a part of themselves with us, hoping to pass on a little bit of their heritage and culture to their children and for future generations and Australians to see.

It was a lovely thing to be a part of and it felt great to be part of something that gives the multicultural community a voice when so much of Australian media overlook these stories. This is a short introduction to the hour long video, which will be screened in full at the Visy Cares Hub in Sunshine Tuesday 15th July at 10.30AM!
